Zinc can be dangerous to your dogs, but just how much of a threat is this? You'd be surprised by the answer. Pennies are one common source of zinc as they began being made in 1983 out of zinc wafers coated in copper. Another common source of zinc is zinc oxide based skin creams, which can include sun screen and diaper rash cream. Nuts and bolts are yet other sources of zinc.
Symptoms of zinc toxicity include anemia, diarrhea, icterus (yellow mucous membranes), kidney failure, liver failure, red urine, and vomiting. A radiograph can determine whether a swallowed object is possibly made of zinc and, if so, it must be immediately removed. Supportive care must then be given, including fluid therapy and sometimes transfusion. Prevention is often the best medicine so be sure to keep all zinc products away from your dog. |
