Concerns about West Nile Virus have increased in recent years in the U.S. The virus is transmitted by mosquitoes. It's been known to affect birds, horses and humans, proving fatal in birds and horses as well as some people with compromised immune systems. Symptoms may include convulsions, lethargy, loss of balance, and hind limb paralysis and paresis.
When it comes to your cat or dog, it appears that West Nile is not a concern. In fact, there have been no cases of West Nile Virus reported in cats. In dogs, there has been only one clinical case and that dog has recovered. It's believed that dogs are, in fact, resistant to the virus. |
