The Uses of Acupuncture in Pets

Acupuncture has been used on people and animals for thousands of years. It assists the workings of the immune system, thereby helping the body to heal itself. Today, acupuncture is being used on our pets to successfully treat a variety of conditions, including the following:

  • Gastrointestinal problems, including constipation, decreased or increased appetite, diarrhea, excessive drooling and pancreatitis, irritable bowel syndrome, and vomiting.
  • Musculoskeletal disorders, including arthritis, hip displasia, lesions of the spine, and limping.
  • General health, including behavior problems, depression, disinterest in food, hair loss, lick granulomas, luster of eyes and coat, and reproductive health.
In addition, acupuncture can be used to provide long-term support to the immune system for a number of diseases, including endocrine problems, kidney disease, Lyme disease and seizure disorders. In this way, it can also be effective during recovery after surgery, to help with the side effect of chemotherapy, and to alleviate pain for cancer patients.
