The Treatment of Arthritis in Pets

Arthritis can occur in pets, affecting the joint areas such as the hips, elbows, knees, back and neck. Treatment of arthritis often combines a variety of approaches, including exercise moderation, weight control, and anti-inflammatory medication. It's important that arthritic pets get exercise to keep them from becoming stiff and sore, but pain can result from too much exercise. Controlling weight is also important as too much weight can put stress on the joints and accelerate joint degeneration. Anti-inflammatory medication can be prescribed for particularly bad days, but do not give any over-the-counter medication to your pet without first consulting with your veterinarian.

In dogs, medical management of arthritis may include a number of prescription medications that have proven effective including Rimadyl and Estogesic, as well as Adequan injections. When medical treatment isn't sufficient, surgery may be an option.

Cats with arthritis and osteoporosis should not be given Tylenol, ibuprofen or high doses of aspirin as these can be very toxic to cats. Instead, cortisone, acupuncture and chiropractic care has shown to be beneficial for cats. In addition, supplements like glucosamine, chrondroitin sulfates, MSM, and omega 3 fatty acids have proven effective for both cats and dogs.
