Systemic lupus erythematosus, or SLE, is a rare disease of the immune system in which the immune system develops antibodies against the nuclear component of its own cells. The effects of SLE may vary but most commonly include arthritis, blood disorders, kidney disease and skin disease. Similar symptoms may occur from some cancers and drug reactions. As such, diagnosis can be difficult.
For treatment, immunosuppressive medication like corticosteroids are most commonly used, sometimes combined with a second immunosuppressive agent. Though not curable, lupus can be managed successfully. |
