Poisonous Plants and Your Pets

A yard that is appealing to your pet is a wonderful thing, so long as it's not appetizing as well. There are a surprising number of common plants that can prove hazardous and even fatal to your pet. The best way to keep your pet safe in your own backyard, as well as in your home, is to be informed. Listed below are some common plants which can produce toxic reactions in animals:

Amaryllis -- Though a pretty flowering plant, the bulb is a gastrointestinal and neurological toxin. Symptoms of poisoning can include vomiting, depression, diarrhea, abdominal pain, hypersalivation, and tremors.
Autumn Crocus (Colchicum Autumnale) -- Both a cardiovascular and gastrointestinal toxin, the entirety of this flowering plant is very poisonous. Symptoms of poisoning can include oral irritation, bloody vomiting, diarrhea, and shock.
Avocado -- The leaves, seeds, stems and skin of the avocado tree are a cardiovascular toxin which can lead to kidney or organ failure. Symptoms of poisoning can include vomiting, diarrhea, respiratory distress, and generalized congestion.
