Older dogs often have a harder time getting around due to hip disorders, arthritis and other problems. There are, however, some things that you can do to help keep your dog mobile and make his life easier and more comfortable.
Around your house, some of your flooring may be difficult for your older dog to maneuver on. On hardwood floors and linoleum it can be tough for your dog to get good traction. You can solve this problem by putting down some throw rugs, mats or other carpeting. Your pet may also have a harder time getting up on a bed or other furniture. You can buy a pre-made step at a pet store or make your own carpeted step to help him up. Similarly, stairs and steps around the house may pose a problem. Pre-made ramps are available at pet store or you can even make your own. When taking your dog on walks, he may have occasional problems going up a hill or climbing a few steps. There are leashes made especially for dogs with hip problems that involve a harness which allows you to easily lift your dog's rear when needed. If walks are out of the question but you'd still like your dog to get some fresh air, a cart or even a kid's wagon may be just the answer. |
