Mange basically refers to those skin conditions which are caused by mites. Though Demodex mites are not considered contagious, most other types of mites are, including Cheyletiella mites, chiggers, ear mites, and scabies mites.
Ear mites are the most common cause of mange in dogs and they are highly contagious. It's common for puppies to get ear mites when they are kept in crowded environments with other animals who may have ear mites. Because of this, it's important that you buy a puppy from a reputable source without known ear mite infestations. Treatment can be either systemic (involving the whole body) or confined solely to the ear. Systemic treatments tend to work best, whereas treatment of just the ear often leads to relapses.
Dogs may acquire chigger mites when roaming in forested areas. Cheyletiella and Scabies mites are acquired by contact with other dogs who are carrying them. Your veterinarian can accurately diagnose and treat your dog if he has acquired mites. |
