Inflammatory Bowel Disease in Pets

Inflammatory Bowel Disease, also known as IBD, is a condition commonly confused with Irritable Bowels Syndrome, or IBS, though they are two completely different conditions. IBD is a condition in which the cells involved in inflammation and immune response are called into the lining of the GI tract, thus thickening the bowel lining and interfering with absorption and the ability of the bowel to contract and move food. Symptoms include a frequent or chronic problem with vomiting or diarrhea or both. Weight loss may also occur and the diarrhea may appear either mucousy with fresh blood or watery.

It is important to rule out other potential causes of chronic vomiting or diarrhea such as parasites, bacteria, chronic pancreatic inflammation or pancreatic enzyme insufficiency. Diagnosis of IBD is typically done through a blood test, though biopsy or surgical exploration may be needed. Radiographs can also be useful in ruling out other problems. Though the causes of IBD are not completely known, some factors may include a food protein allergy, the continuing presence of a parasite, or an immune problem. Treatment of IBD involves suppression of the inflammation. Prednisone is most often used and dietary changes, including fat restriction and/or hypoallergenic diets, may be required.
