Heartworm disease is transmitted by mosquitoes. Once a dog has become infected, treating the heartworms can be difficult, requiring drugs and sometimes hospitalization, and it can even be fatal. Because of this, preventative measures are the best course of action.
Each year, your dog should be tested for heartworms. Dogs who test negative should be given a preventative heartworm medication as recommended by your veterinarian. Medication can be given either once a day or once a month, and can also be given year-round or only during the months when mosquitoes are active. |
