First Aid Tips For Dogs

In the event of an emergency involving your dog, there are some important first aid tips that owners should be aware of. First, make sure that you have emergency phone numbers listed near your phone. These should include your veterinarian's phone number as well as the number of the nearest emergency pet clinic. For any serious emergency, contact your veterinarian or an emergency pet clinic immediately. You can do the following, as appropriate, while contacting them or when on route:

  • In the event of bleeding, apply a pressure bandage such as sterile gauze or a handkerchief to stem or stop the bleeding.
  • For burns, apply a cold compress.
  • To keep your dog warm or restrict movement, wrap him in a blanket or heavy towel.
  • If frostbite occurs, move your dog to a warm spot and apply warm, moist towels, changing them to keep them warm, until the affected areas become flushed.
  • If heatstroke occurs, move your dog to a cool place, sponge him with cold water, and encourage him to drink small portions of water.
  • In the event of poisoning, do not induce vomiting unless your veterinarian has told you to do so.
In the event of choking, do not attempt to remove the item.
