Most of us are aware of the benefits of fiber in our own diets, but it's also beneficial for your dog. Fiber is particularly important when it comes to obesity in dogs. For dogs who are fed weight reduction and weight management diets, fiber helps to provide your pet with a feeling of fullness and to reduce caloric intake. Because of this, fiber should be combined with portion control and exercise.
As with humans, fiber also helps to prevent constipation in pets. Some also believe that the addition of fiber can help with anal gland problems in dogs. It's also been shown that a moderate increase in dietary fiber can be beneficial in the management of diabetes mellitus as it can slow down the absorption of sugar from the intestine.
Keep in mind, however, that excessive dietary fiber can have negative effects, including gas, increased stool volume or density, and loose stools. |
