False pregnancy, also known as pseudopregnancy and pseudocyesis, occurs when nonpregnant female dogs, and far less frequently nonpregnant female cats, display the behavior and physical signs of pregnancy. This can even happen with spayed females, though false pregnancy is related to ovarian abnormalities and hormonal imbalances.
Signs of false pregnancy may be minimal, but they can include the following: slightly swollen abdomen, milk production in the mammary glands, restlessness, irritability, aggression, and maternal behavior like carrying around toys or other objects or preparing a nest.
False pregnancy may resolve itself on its own. However, it is common for false pregnancy to reoccur and for complications to occur. Medication is sometimes prescribed, however spaying is often the best solution. |
