On average, dogs and cats require a minimum of six teaspoons of water per pound of body weight every day. In normal pets, water consumption may increase after physical exertion or in hot weather. There are also certain medical conditions, like kidney problems and diabetes, as well as psychological disturbances like anxiety that can be to blame.
If your pet appears to be drinking more than he usually does, have him seen by your veterinarian for an exam and blood and urine tests. Do not limit or withhold water unless your veterinarian advises you to as this can be dangerous and even exacerbate illness. |
