A carnassial tooth abscess occurs when the carnassial tooth (the last premolar tooth of the upper jaw) becomes infected, causing the roots to extend into the adjacent bone and break through the skin. This creates a small, draining wound just beneath the eye. Carnassial tooth infections can occur from poor dental care and possibly from facial injuries.
Treatment usually involves extraction or a root canal of the infected tooth, and general anesthesia is typically required. Properly caring for your dog's teeth can help to prevent this disease. It's also possible that it may be prevented by eliminating bones and hard toys. |
