Bufo toads are a type of toad with skin secretions that are highly toxic to dogs, cats and other animals. These secretions can also cause skin irritations in people. Bufo toads are fairly large, usually 6 to 8 inches long, with brown to gray-brown skin and a light yellow belly. They live in tropical areas around the world and are commonly found in yards and along ponds and canals, more so during the wet season. Because part of the diet of the Bufo toad can include pet food and table scraps, you can help to prevent attracting them by properly storing and disposing of these items.
Poisoning occurs when pets come into contact with the Bufo toad and symptoms can include a foaming mouth, shaking, vomiting and diarrhea. If left untreated, seizures, irregular heartbeat and even death can occur. Because early treatment is essential, contact your veterinarian immediately if you suspect that your pet has come into contact with a Bufo toad. Your veterinarian may first advice you to wash out your pet's mouth, particularly along the gums, using a hose before bringing him in to be seen. |
