Bacterial Hypersensitivity in Pets

Bacterial hypersensitivity is a skin condition resulting in red sores, hair loss, scaliness and intense itching that results from a hypersensitivity, or allergy, to certain bacteria. Because the sores may resemble a bull's eye, it's important that this condition be differentiated from Lyme Disease.

Bacterial hypersensitivity may be caused by another disease, in which case a complete recovery can often be expected. Young pets under the age of one can also often expect a full recovery. For older pets and those without an underlying disease, management of the condition if often required for the rest of the pet's life using periodic antibiotic and/or immunologic treatment. The use of antibiotics may be required on a long-term basis of six to ten weeks.
