Just as with humans, when pets are facing surgery there may be concerns about anesthesia. Keep in mind, however, that anesthesia can be your pet's ally in times of need, keeping him relaxed or unconscious, free of pain and immobile.
Today, anesthesia is much safer for your pet and involves fewer risks than in the past. Nonetheless, the risks of anesthesia can be further reduced by having pre-anesthetic testing as well as anesthetic monitoring. Pets also react differently to anesthesia than humans and usually do not experience the nausea or headaches that people may experience upon waking up. There are many different forms of anesthesia and different way in which it can be administered so be sure to talk with you veterinarian about what is right for you pet. |
