Acetaminophen and Pets

If you're concerned that your pet is feeling a little under the weather, don't give him acetaminophen, or Tylenol. While this drug may be very effective in people, it can be harmful to pets. In dogs, one or two tablets of acetaminophen given daily over several days can lead to liver toxicity. In cats, even a half of a tablet can lead to poisoning and inhibit the ability of the red blood cells to carry oxygen. In fact, acetaminophen poisoning is one of the most commonly seen forms of drug toxicity in cats.

Symptoms of acetaminophen toxicity can occur within one to four hours and may include the following: abdominal pain, darkened mucous membranes, depression, rapid breathing, salivation, and vomiting. Cats may also experience facial swelling and chocolate-colored urine. If you suspect acetaminophen toxicity in your pet, contact your veterinarian immediately.
