Aside from the many health and behavioral advantages, by spaying or neutering your pet you don't have to worry about unwanted kittens or puppies. An average fertile dog can produce two litters of six to ten puppies a year, which can theoretically add up to 67,000 dogs over the course of six years. Even worse, an average fertile cat can produce three litters of four to six kittens a year, theoretically adding up to 420,000 cats over seven years. Sure, puppies and kittens may be cute, but we doubt you can handle that many of them!
By spaying or neutering your pet, you won't be contributing to the already epidemic pet overpopulation. The statistics associated with the pet overpopulation are staggering. Just consider these facts from the Humane Society of the U.S.:
- During every hour in the U.S. , 55,000 pets are born
- One half of the animals surrendered to kill shelters are euthanized (killed)
- Between 8 and 12 million dogs and cats are surrendered to shelters each year
- 4 to 6 million of these dogs and cats are euthanized each year
- About 7 dogs are euthanized by animal shelters every minute
