Best Friends Pet Care: Boarding, Grooming, and More

Facts About Dogs and Cats

Sanitation: The kennel must always be kept clean with no signs of animal feces, must always display proper and adequate ventilation, and must be free from offensive odors and parasite infestation (flies, fleas, ticks).

Health Care: Dogs and cats should be properly immunized prior to being boarded. Find out what the kennel's protocol is with regard to the immunization of pets prior to boarding. Ask if they request proof of vaccination before accepting any animal, what policies they follow regarding flea and tick control, and whether your pet will be safe from parasites while boarded. Some centers give your pet a flea shower before they leave as a precaution, so see if this is also available at the place where your pet will stay.

Some pets might suffer ailments and require special medication while in the center. If the kennel accepts this responsibility, find out if they will document medication administered, how they obtain veterinary help when needed, and if their veterinarian is a certified and trusted professional.

Check on the kennel's feeding procedures and mention any special dietary needs that your pet may have. Also find out with your pet’s veterinarian whether a change of diet might affect your pet and/or check with the kennel center to see if your pet’s diet can be maintained if you provide them with the food. Individual water bowls must be provided for each animal. If pets are given a metal bowl, make sure that they give your pet a stainless steel bowl. Ask how often will your pet be served water.

Some extra recommendations:

• Bring an extra blanket for your pet. Some animals recognize its smell and will feel secure if they have something that reminds them of you.
• Make a list of all the things you are leaving your pet with, and be sure to mark them with your pet’s name to avoid confusion.
• Leashes and collars are often mistaken, therefore it is recommended that you use a used leash or one that is not your favorite in case it gets lost.
• When dropping off your pet at the center, try not to look sad in front of him or her. Animals can often perceive their owners’ feelings and this might affect their adaptation. Make a short and cheerful farewell.
