Evaluating a Kennel
Once you have selected the local kennels, you can determine the one to use by:
1. Telephoning the kennel. It is important that you call the kennel beforehand for two reasons. First, there are certain seasons in which kennels have no space – usually during special holidays and vacations - and therefore will not have room for accommodating your pet. Some kennels might not be able to provide your pet with special care if needed, therefore on your first call to the center be specific about your pet’s needs and your expectations of the place so as to find a suitable place. The second reason for calling is to make an appointment for you to visit and tour the place before dropping your pet off.
2. Making a personal visit to the kennel. As previously mentioned, the personal visit will give you the opportunity to see the facilities of the center and, more importantly, will give you the chance to get to know the people who will be caring for your pet while you are away. The following text will give you an idea of what to look for during your visit:
General appearance of the kennel: Overall, the kennel center has to be a suitable place. Take your time to check it out, walk around where permitted, and try to get a general idea not only of what the whole place looks like but also how the employees work there. Some people might even suggest that you inspect the place as if you would inspect a daycare. Keep in mind that this is the place where your pet will be staying for the next few days. If the place does not give you the comfort that you desire, your pet might feel the same way that you do. It is important that the center always presents a tidy and pleasant appearance and does not have a bad odor. If possible, find out how frequently the place is cleaned. Also make sure that the temperature is appropriate for your pet. Some centers might be too warm or too cold and this might be unbearable for your pet. While checking the facility, ask to see where your pet will be walked or the place where he or she will play and sleep. Each pet must have its own appropriate and comfortable space where they will feel safe and secure from others. Talk to the people who will be taking care of your pet and observe their interaction with other pets. Also see, if possible, what the behavior of those pets is while in their temporary home, what type of games they play, exercises, etc. Make use of this opportunity to find out whether you can bring one of your pet’s toys, a stuffed animal or a ball your pet likes to play with. It will make his or her stay less stressful and more enjoyable.
