Successful Boarding

The goals of ABKA member kennels are to have joyful, healthier pets and satisfied pet owners. Achieving these goals is not an easy task and requires a cooperative effort from both the kennel owner and pet owner. In response to multiple requests from responsible and concerned pet owners, the ABKA has listed the features you should always keep in mind when selecting an appropriate kennel center, along with some suggestions about what to do to ensure that your pet receives the best care available. Let's start from the beginning...

Finding a local kennel

There currently exists several sources available for locating kennel centers that are most convenient to you. Among the most frequently used means of finding a kennel are the following:

• Yellow Pages: Advertising in the yellow pages is the most commonly used method of kennel advertising. When using this source, keep in mind that the size of the ad is not always an indication or guarantee of the facility's quality of service.
• Internet Search: The ABKA Website lists a number of kennel centers and you are more certain to find one close to home or the most appropriate one for your pet. You can also contact the ABKA at (719) 667-1600.
• Better Business Bureau: If your community has a Better Business Bureau, a phone inquiry about your local kennels is always appropriate. Request information from this Bureau about a specific kennel's reputation and find out if any complaint has been entered against that center.
• Recommendations of friends: Comments of satisfied customers are the best recommendation that a kennel can receive. Ask friends and neighbors who might share their experiences with you. Check with your veterinarian or ask the kennel in question for references.
