Familiarizing your pet with traveling
If your pet has never traveled by car or is otherwise unfamiliar with car travel, it’s advised that you start with a series of shorter trips before taking a longer one. This will help your pet to become used to traveling in this condition.
Before driving
Feed your pet small amounts of food before beginning the trip, usually about one third of their normal amount. Keep the remainder to feed your pet once you’ve reached your destination.
While driving
• Control your pet using a seat belt or secured carrier especially designed for pets.
• It is extremely dangerous to let your pet ride unrestrained in the back of a truck and should never be allowed.
• Always make sure that air is being circulated frequently. If it is hot outside, use your air conditioning.
• Take breaks at least every three hours to allow your pet to exercise and relieve himself.
During rest stops
• Never leave your pet unattended in the car for an extended amount of time, especially during warm or cold weather. This is extremely dangerous for your pet’s health.
• Give your pet sufficient water in order to recover any liquid your pet might have lost while traveling.
• Do not allow your pet to run loose at rest areas and always stay close to your pet. A pet can become lost, run into traffic, or get involved in a fight with another animal.
• Do not let your pet eat or chew anything that might be laying on the ground.
• If your pet relieves himself, make sure you clean up after him or her.
