Boarding Your Older Pet

Staying at a boarding center and away from family and home can be a stressful experience for your pet. It might be a harder experience for an older pet, especially if he of she is not accustomed to staying at unfamiliar places. Older pets require a lot more care and attention than younger ones. They might not need as much time or space for exercise and play, but they do need to have a place where they will feel comfortable, safe and happy. Due to their age and the special care needed, it is suggested that you leave your pet at a boarding center that will best accommodate your pet’s needs.

When choosing or selecting a kennel center for your older pet, be sure to take into account the following considerations:

• Talk to the center’s personnel regarding the special care of your geriatric pet and obtain as much information as possible regarding any special services they offer for senior pet care. Should the kennel have a specific area where older pets are accommodated, see if it would be possible for you to take a tour. Older pets require a comfortable place to stay and sleep so be sure to check these as well.

• Older pets can suffer from a number of ailments and may require medication. The center where your pet will be staying must be able to meet these needs and any other special handling your pet might require. When discussing your pet’s conditions with the center’s personnel, advise them of all information necessary for them to take better care of your pet. Take along all medications your pet may need during his stay and make sure to label them appropriately and specify any instructions about administering them. If you dog or cat is on several medications or a complicated dosage schedule, a small chart or calendar showing the medication(s) schedule may help staff to keep treatments on time.
