Training

Want a Well Behaved Dog?
We Know just the Trick.

Come. Sit. Stay a while. After a short time at Best Friends, your wish for a “good dog” is our command.

We offer a wide variety of dog training classes to fit dogs from puppyhood to adult. Your dog can learn basic commands in dog obedience classes or you can try our unique Board & Train program which allows your pet to have one-on-one training while he stays the night. Imagine, going away and coming back to a dog who no longer eats your shoes! We also offer more advanced classes like dog agility training.

Our techniques, taught by experienced dog trainers, are always positively reinforced. And class sizes are small, ensuring your pet gets the attention he or she deserves.

For both pets and their owners, training at Best Friends is the REAL treat.

About Our Trainer:

Domenick Salvemini is an ABC Certified Dog Trainer graduate from the Animal Behavior College (ABC) located in Santa Clarita, CA. The year long, multi-phased, Certified Dog Training Course offered by ABC is extensive, and the approach is comprehensive. The material stresses the principles of obedience training, the understanding of the unique behaviors associated with different breeds, and the regular application of proven problem-solving techniques. Domenick’s training method is based on the concept of positive reinforcement. Learning and behavior changes are realized through a reward system that, properly timed and consistent, will facilitate change for the better. Anything of value to your dog-treats, toys, affection, or praise-will get your dog’s attention. Rewards decrease in frequency as the process continues. Eventually, praise, with an occasional treat, will be enough to ensure your dog puts his best paw forward.

Domenick’s aspiration is to train your dog to be polite, well-mannered, and fun to be around. A forever friend with a forever home. Ultimately, his goal is to keep as many dogs out of shelters, and in good homes, as he possibly can. As part of his commitment to local, disadvantaged dogs, he volunteers his time and expertise with MAGDRL, the Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League, where his compassionate and patient approach have been invaluable. Domenick spends his days as a mechanical engineer, and every other moment as a dog trainer. He stays current in the latest training techniques by attending continuing education seminars and workshops.

Domenick is accompanied by his 9 year old black and tan, Abbey, who is CGC and a therapy dog who spends time with elderly and children alike. He also had an18 month old Great Dane named Shilo, who’s size is only exceeded by his love for children and other canine friends. Both living in harmony at Domenick’s home with two 14 year old cats, Rusty and Dusty.

Board & Train
A board and train program is a great way to obtain foundation training. Your dog can achieve fluency in basic cues, such as sit, down, wait, come, and stay while boarding. Walking nicely on leash is another popular board and train request. We can address behavior problems as well as develop reliability of previous training. Puppies and young dogs benefit from frequent and deliberate socialization opportunities, which a board and train stay can provide. An initial consultation (by phone or in person) is required to outline goals. A written report and transition meeting are included to ensure that appropriate behaviors continue at home.

Private Lessons
Individual training sessions are available, either in the owner’s home or at our North Plainfield center. This option is most appropriate for dogs that are reactive in a group class situation and owners who prefer to work one-on-one. Private training is the most effective way to correct many behavioral issues.

Day/ Drop Off Training
Training sessions are available to our boarding Play and Stay guests, during doggy day camp, and on a drop-off basis. Pull out or drop-off training can resolve problems such as pulling/reactivity on leash and jumping. These sessions can also help to install impulse control and frustration tolerance, which are sources of unruly behaviors. An initial consultation is recommended to determine training goals.
