Caitlin Day of Newington CT has been awarded the Grand Prize in the Best Friends Pet Care “Nippin’ at your Nose” winter photo contest for her photo entitled “Poncho’s First Snow”. The photo features Poncho, an 8-month old Chihuahua-Yorkie mix puppy, his face dotted with snow, being snuggled by a caring human against an icy snow storm.

Best Friends Pet Care center at Walt Disney World® Resort, which opened in September 2010, has been honored with a special award for outstanding architectural design by the Miami chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

The “Googie Architecture Design Award” was presented to Mateu Architecture, Inc., designer of the Best Friends facility, at the 2011 AIA Miami Design Awards gala in November.

Animal lovers can share their holiday spirit throughout the month of December by donating food, toys and treats for homeless dogs and cats to Best Friends Pet Care’s 11^th Annual Angel Tree campaign to benefit community animal shelters.

The holiday season can be challenging for local shelters and rescues. Donations of food and funds fall off and regular volunteers are preoccupied with the holidays. The poor economy over the past two years has made matters even worse and many shelters depend upon the Best Friends Angel Tree program to get through the holiday season.

Chef Penny slices some turkey, places it on a fancy plate, adds some trimmings, and serves it to Henry and Eloise, two of her eager holiday guests. Henry’s ears promptly fall into his plate while Eloise dives face first into her meal.

Not your usual Thanksgiving vignette, but this is no ordinary Thanksgiving dinner: Henry is a Basset Hound, Eloise is an Old English Sheepdog and this feast was specially prepared for four-legged guests boarding at Best Friends Pet Care.

For the fifth year, each of Best Friends 42 U.S. locations will host a special Thanksgiving Day feast for family pets boarding over the holiday. The meal features freshly roasted slices of turkey on top of turkey-and-rice dog food and is trimmed with green beans and carrots. There’s a sweet potato biscuit for dessert.
