The Come command is one of the most important commands that you can teach your puppy. Not only will it make your life a whole lot easier, it will also keep your dog safer. When teaching your dog to come, it is very important that you never scold or otherwise punish your dog for failing to come. By doing so, you may actually teach your dog not to come as he may associate coming to you with being scolded. Often times, there are a number of other things competing for your dog's attention. You need to be the most appealing of all those things and scolding your dog won't accomplish that.
When your puppy is around the age of 7 weeks, you should start using this command. Call your puppy to you when feeding him, taking him out, or in other situations that he already enjoys. Be sure to praise him when he responds appropriately. Some puppies love to be rewarded with praise and affection and others may need a treat or toy. Remember to keep your voice encouraging and enthusiastic, not threatening, when you're calling him. You should only repeat the command once. If you're having trouble with this, put your dog on a very long leash. Say the command and, if he doesn't respond, reel him in and praise him once he's reached you. Repeat this exercise. |
