Introducing Your Puppy to the Leash and Collar

Getting your puppy or dog used to wearing a collar is not a complicated task. It usually takes only a short few hours until they accept it. The most important thing is to make sure that the collar is the proper size for your dog’s neck with sufficient space to avoid suffocation. Once you put the collar on for the first time, your dog might act a bit uncomfortable until he gets accustomed to it. Refrain from laughing or making a big deal when your dog refuses the collar as your dog might think that you are encouraging him. Once your dog gets used to it, he will go about his daily activities without worrying about the collar anymore.

Introducing your puppy to the leash is also a simple task. Simply attach the leash to the collar and let it stay there for a few minutes, always supervising your dog just in case the leash gets stuck on something. It is also a good idea to put the leash on when your puppy is eating, this will help him associate the leash with good things. Once your puppy learns to accept the leash, the next step will require you to grab the other end of the leash and hold it in your hand for a brief period of time. At this point, do not try to walk your dog, just let him stand there. What you want to avoid is your puppy pulling the leash. If there is no problems with this, then start walking with your dog within your house, always following with lots of praise for the correct behavior and for not pulling the leash.
