Obedience Training For Your Dog

Training requires patience, a good sense of humor, and willingness to understand your dog's behavior. You can get started with any number of books and other sources written about training dogs or with an obedience instructor or dog trainer. Training can be accomplished at home, in an obedience class, or with a private instructor. Before you decide to teach your dog how to obey you, it is always advisable that you enroll in a dog obedience training class to learn the basic steps. Afterwards, teaching and training can and should be performed in your home. It is recommended that you begin training in an area that is recognizable to your dog and with the least amount of distractions possible. Once you feel both you and your dog have become skilled at a few obedience commands, take these commands to different vicinities. Slowly introducing distractions may seem to you like starting the entire process once again, but it is indeed worth the effort.

Positive Reinforcement: One of the most popular techniques for teaching your dog obedience, and perhaps one of the most successful, is reward training or positive reinforcement. Reward training integrates food rewards or a show of attention and affection in exchange for a good deed or performance. In reward training a lure is frequently used to get the dog into the desired position. The idea of the lure is to get the dog to execute a specific behavior of the dog's own will, without the need of physical handling. Once the dog has carried out the desired behavior, it is rewarded or reinforced. The more times your dog is rewarded, the quicker he will learn. Read what our dog trainers have to say.
