Establishing a closer relationship with your dog: One very good reason for implementing obedience training is to establish a foundation from which you and your dog will learn to successfully relate to one another. An well-trained dog will respond correctly to your instructions, instead of trying to comply out of fear or discontent for your disapproval. Once suitably trained, your dog will understand and show submission to you by happily complying with your orders and requests. Dogs actually feel calmer and more at ease when a close relationship of affection and authority is established. Your dog will answer to your command by raising his paw when asked, rolling over, sitting while food is served, or staying down while driving. Dogs enjoy performing these kinds of tricks for you knowing that there is reward in your affection and approval. There is absolutely no need to use extreme measures in order to show your dog who the boss is.
Communicating with your dog: Training opens up a line of communication between you and your dog. Effective communication is necessary to educate your dog about what you want him to do. Thus, creating a common language for you and your dog is important. Through brief commands or orders previously taught to your dog, you will indicate a desired reaction. This, in turn, allows your dog to display the correct reaction to the given command. Learn more about dog training.
