Dog Training Basic Manners

Excessive Whining

This problem usually develops when your puppy has wrongly learned that whining is the method by which he gets what he desires. Your puppy has arrived at this conclusion based on previous experience. He has learned that he can get you to meet his demands just by whining and crying. Puppies may also react this way because they have been used to being with you all the time. When they do not see you around, they feel abandoned, fearful and lonely. It’s best to end this tendency before it becomes unbearable.

In order for you to accomplish this, you must start by getting your puppy used to spending relatively short periods of time in confinement. While confined, make sure that you spend some fun time with your dog. This will help your dog to create good associations between confinement and entertainment. Before you are ready to leave your dog confined, you should make sure that he has already been accustomed to being left alone. Practice coming back and forth to your home to see how your puppy is managing. You can tell that he is doing well if you do not hear him whine when he does not see you. However, if he whines, do not attempt to calm him down, simply ignore him. Gradually increase the length of time you spend outside and reassure your dog upon your return that everything is fine.

Bear in mind that dogs will sometimes whine in an effort to let you know that something is wrong. If your dog develops this problem in a sudden manner, then it may be best to take him to a veterinarian and have him examined.
