TEACHING YOUR DOG TO WALK PROPERLY
Teaching your dog to properly walk on a leash is not a complicated task. Following is one exercise that we found useful for this task. You will need a collar and leash for this exercise. Begin by having your dog sit in front of you. Give your dog a treat to sniff for a brief second. Get your dog to focus his attention on you by using a command such as ‘Watch me’. While you say the command, bring the treat up to your chin. As your dog tracks your hand, reward him by saying ‘Good’, then give him the treat.
Once this is finished, repeat this exercise two or three more times, and then stop. Repeat the same process once again later on. As soon as your dog is regularly looking up at your face when given the command, repeat the command and slowly back away. What you want to accomplish at this time is to have your dog’s sight locked onto you while at the same time he is walking forward towards you. Begin by backing up four or five steps, always remembering to praise your dog as he observes and walks towards you. Once you achieve this, stop and have your dog sit again and then proceed to do the exercise two or three more time until he has it down.
Once your dog understands everything up to this point, proceed to the next step. As you are walking backwards and your dog is following you, turn so that he ends up on your left and you are both walking forward together. Praise your dog as he continues to watch you. Walk a few steps forward and then stop, praising your dog enthusiastically for the accomplished task.
If your dog, for any given reason, gets distracted and pulls ahead while the two of you are practicing, hold onto the leash and back away. Your dog will hit the end of the leash and will have to turn around towards you. As your dog turns around, command him to watch you and keep backing away. When you get your dog's attention back again, continue your original lessons.
FINAL RECOMMENDATIONS
The commands that you teach your dog must not only be used during training sessions, but also throughout your regular daily activities. You can ask your dog to sit before being petted, before he is let outside, or before his food is served. Anytime that you need him, use the come command. Always be consistent with the use of your commands, both around the house and outside. If you practice these four basic but very important commands, you will be amazed by the difference that they make in your dog’s development and behavior.
