The Saint Bernard can have either a shorthaired coat or a rough-haired coat. The shorthaired coat is dense and smooth, while the rough-haired coat is longer with feathering on the thighs and legs. Both shed twice a year and require daily brushing with a firm bristle brush. The eyes need to be regularly checked and kept clean. Baths should be given only when necessary and a mild soap must be used to avoid stripping the coat of its oils. More dog grooming tips.
