Pain or illness may also cause a dog to bite. If he is in pain and you touch him, he may not be able to distinguish between you or an illness causing him pain. In other words, he may think that you're causing him pain and he may bite you in order to stop the pain. Leave a dog alone, even your dog, if he appears hurt or sick and then tell an adult so that the dog can get medical help.
A dog that is about to bite may give you some warning signs that he is upset or threatened. His ears ear may be held back against his head, his legs may be very stiff, the hair on his back (hackles) may be standing up, he may be growling or barking, or he may be baring his teeth. If this occurs, stop what you're doing and freeze. Slowly, and to yourself, count to five, then move very slowly away, either sideways or backwards. If, despite your efforts, the dog jumps on you, curl up into a ball and cover your face and head with your arms. Just as there are things that you should do, there are several things that you should not do. Do not stare, run, jump, wave your arms, scream, hit the dog, or throw anything at him. If you are bitten by a dog, you should wash the wound with soap and warm water and have an adult take you to a doctor. Then report the incident to your local animal control agency, including as much information as possible about the dog and where you were.
