Mixing Dogs and Kids

Domestic tranquility doesn't always come easily when you're mixing species. Animal behavior experts suggest two basic strategies to help avoid mayhem in your home: childproof your pets, and pet-prep your children.

The majority of dogs are friendly, wanting petting and interaction. But not all dogs are friendly, and it's important for your kid's safety to know what they should do when playing with their dog. Before the child arrives, you should modify the way that you handle your animal so that it more closely resembles how a child would behave. Handling should focus on ears, tail, paws etc., initially by stroking and later with gentle pulling. The dog should be rewarded for accepting this contact. It will also be beneficial if other children can be encouraged to handle the dog while rewarding the dog with food or praise. In addition, your routine with the dog should be modified in anticipation of the arrival of a new child. If the dog is used to spending all of its time with the owner, this should gradually be reduced so that no sudden reduction occurs when the child arrives.

When you return from the hospital, your pet may be eager to greet you and receive your attention. Have someone else take the baby into another room while you give your pet a warm but calm welcome. Keep some treats handy so that you can distract your pet. After the initial greeting, you can bring your pet with you to sit next to the baby and reward him with treats for appropriate behavior. Remember, you want your pet to view associating with the baby as a positive experience. To prevent anxiety or injury, never force your pet to get near the baby and always supervise any interaction.
