Male cats with FLUTD are at risk of developing a blockage in the urinary tract. This is because the male urethra is much narrower in diameter than the female's. If blockage occurs, urgent and intensive treatment is required otherwise the urinary tract may suffer irreversible damage and the cat may die.
Treating the urinary blockage is aimed at removing the obstruction, sometimes with massage and other times with a solution that breaks up and flushes it out. The cat is usually sedated for this procedure. In some cases, surgery may be required. If urine build up becomes a concern, the bladder can be drained with a hypodermic needle. Supportive medical treatment and monitoring may be required after treatment. |
