Notoedric Mange in Cats

Notoedric mange, also known as feline scabies, is a skin disease which occurs from infection by the feline mite Notoedres cati. It is a highly inflammatory condition which leads to intense itching and a scabby and scaly appearance of the skin. The first signs of notoedric mange typically appear on the ears as itchy crusts and scales. The condition usually moves to the face and, if left untreated, can affect the cat's entire body.

Though notoedric mange is generally considered rare in the U.S. , there are some regional ‘hot beds' of infection, including the Southern California area, where the condition can be fairly common. An infected cat can transmit the infection to humans, dogs and even rabbits simply through touch. A scraping of the crusty skin can be examined under the microscope to diagnose notoedric mange. Treatment options include dipping, Ivermectin injection, and Selamectin topical application. In multiple cat households where one cat has been diagnosed, all cats may require treatment.
