Hyperthyroidism in Cats

Hyperthyroidism in cats is caused by a benign growth in the thyroid gland and most commonly effects older cats. The most common symptom is weight loss, though some cats may also experience muscle deterioration, chronic vomiting, or chronic diarrhea.

Timely treatment of hyperthyroidism is important as it can lead to heart disease and heart failure, high blood pressure, sudden blindness and even sudden death. Diagnosis is typically done through blood tests. There are three treatment options: radiotheraphy, surgery, and oral medication.
