One of the most common causes of ear disorders in cats is mite infestation. Though ear mites can occur in cats of any age, kittens and young cats are more commonly affected. Symptoms of ear mites may include head shaking, itching and scratching. Further, close inspection of the ear typically shows very dark, almost black wax in the ear canal and sometimes even white dots swarming on the surface of the wax which are the adult ear mites.
In some cases, so much wax may be produced in the ear canal that it becomes completely blocked. Also, permanent scarring can occur if left untreated. Cats acquire mites when they have been in contact with an infested cats. As such, treatment must be given to all animals within the household. In the past, successfully treating ear mites was rather difficult, but a new product known as Stronghold has proven far more successful. If you suspect that your cat may have ear mites, have her seen by your veterinarian. |
