We offer a wide variety of dog training classes to fit dogs from puppyhood to adult. Our unique Board & Train program allows your pet to have one-on-one training while he stays the night. Imagine, going away and coming back to a dog who no longer eats your shoes!
Our training techniques, taught by experienced instructors, are always positively reinforced. And class sizes are small, ensuring your pet gets the attention he or she deserves.
For both pets and their owners, training at Best Friends is the REAL treat.
Meet Your Trainer, Joy Aldrich
Joy has been training dogs professionally since 2007. She recently earned the CPDT-KA certification, and earned her training certificate through Animal Behavior College in 2008, and has trained hundreds of dogs in classes and private lessons. She is a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers and the Massachusetts Canine Professionals Club. Her own Boxer Cassie earned the Canine Good Citizen certificate. She uses only positive reinforcement training techniques and treats every dog like her own.
Puppy Kindergarten covers all the basics so your puppy will get off to a great start as a well-behaved member of your family. Your puppy will socialize with other pups and you'll learn how to manage digging, jumping up, counter-surfing and other behavior issues. In this class you'll conquer puppy problems like housetraining, chewing and nipping and teach your puppy commands including Sit, Stay, Down, Come, Leave It and Drop It. For puppies 9 weeks to 6 months. Classes are 1 hour.
Adult Obedience 1
A well-behaved and trained dog is a joy to be around, blends in well to your household, and is polite when meeting family and friends. They are happier when they know some boundaries and in turn, you are happier because your dog is happy! This class will cover all the basic commands – Sit, Stay, Come, Down, Leave It, Drop It, Walking on Leash, Wait to Eat and Wait to Go Out, and will give a basis for clicker training. For adult dogs 6 months +. 1 hour sessions.
Adult Obedience II
This class will focus on adding distance, distraction and duration to basic obedience commands. Prerequisite: Adult Obedience I. Your dog will learn: Stays: Long-distance, Stays with Owner going out of Sight, Stays with distractions, Come outdoors (weather permitting) on and off-leash (in an enclosed area), Loose-leash walking with Distractions, Perfect other commands, such as Leave It, Drop It and Down and Clicker Training. For adult dogs 6 months +. 1 hour sessions.
Clicker training is the newest technique in training, but requires the right know-how and excellent timing to be successful. The benefits of clicker training are accelerated learning, precision, reliability, better communication, and fun. The clicker can be used to train tricks and other hard-to-teach behaviors. Prerequisite: Adult Obedience I or Puppy Kindergarten.
For adult dogs 6 months +. 1 hour sessions.
Canine Good Citizen
The CGC Program, run by the AKC, stresses responsible pet ownership and good manners in dogs, and is a prerequisite to take the Therapy Dog Test. A CGC certificate gives you the confidence that your dog is well behaved and can go anywhere. Some the items from the test covered are: accepting a friendly stranger, sitting politely for petting, appearance and grooming (allowing someone such as a groomer to handle your dog), walking through a crowd, reaction to another dog (friendly but calm), reaction to distraction, supervised separation, basic obedience skills, including loose-leash walking, Sit, Down, Stay and Come on command. Note: We are not yet offering the CGC Test at Best Friends. We can refer you to a local test site on completion of the class. For Adult Obedience II graduates. 1 hour sessions.
