Traveling With Your Pet: Lodging Etiquette

Because some facilities will not allow unattended pets, ask beforehand if you can leave your pet in the room without any supervision and in a cage. Some pets might not be accustomed to being in a cage; you can help them adapt to it by placing them into a cage while at home. Whether or not you are in the room, it is always recommended that you hang the 'Do Not Disturb' sign outside the door. This will reduce any problems that may occur should the housekeeper enter your room or anyone else knock on the door and trigger barking.

Though your pet may have been accepted onto the property, that typically does not mean that you can take him into a dining area, bar, lounge, or pool area. When walking your pet always keep him on a leash and far from public areas. Do not allow your pet to drink water from public or hotel fountains, they usually contain chemicals that can be poisonous to your pet, and always clean up after your pet.

If for any reason your pet might cause any damage within the facilities where you are staying, seek to find a solution to the problem. If possible, offer to pay to repair the damage caused as a courtesy. For additional information, read our tips on Traveling With Your Pet.
