Six Tips For Living With
Pets and Allergies

Tip #1: Baths. You can greatly reduce the level of allergens on your pet's fur by giving him a weekly bath. This goes for both dogs and cats. We know that bathing cats isn't really something to look forward to, but most cats really will become accustomed to frequent bathing with enough time.

Tip #2: The Allergy-Free Zone. Set up an area in your house that can be designated as an allergy-free zone. The best place is often the bedroom. Prohibit your pet from going into this area and use a high-efficiency HEPA air cleaner. Further, you can use covers for the mattress and pillows that are impermeable and will not allow allergen particles to accumulate on them.

Tip #3: Clean Air. Use HEPA air cleaners throughout the rest of your home and not just in your allergy-free zone.

Tip #4: Clean Surroundings. To thoroughly remove dust and dander, clean your home frequently and use a microfilter bag in your vacuum cleaner. Keep in mind, too, that cloth curtains, carpet and the like are big dust and dander catch-alls so avoid them if you can. Otherwise, frequently wash curtains, pillow covers, couch covers, pet beds and the like.

Tip #5: Other Allergens. Many people suffering from allergies are sensitive to multiple allergens. Because of that, your pet may not be the only one to blame. Get tested by an allergist to find out if you're allergic to other things like dust, pollen, smoke, etc, and then pay attention to these as well.

Tip #6: Allergy Treatment. There are different ways to treat your allergies, though you may not be able to entirely eliminate your symptoms. Immunotherapy is one type of treatment that involves allergy shots to gradually desensitize a person's immune system to certain allergens. Other treatments can include antihistamine pills and steroidal and antihistamine nose sprays.
