When it comes to your pets, good grooming isn't just about improving their appearance. Regular grooming also contributes to your pet's overall health and well-being and helps to prevent disease. Your pet should be brushed on a regular basis. Start with a wide-toothed comb and look for signs of mats, growths, fleas or the like while you comb the fur. Next use a wire brush and brush out any dead hairs. If you encounter any mats, try to gently pull them apart with your fingers or use a mat splitter, a mat comb, or even a comb and scissors. Don't forget to pay attention to your pet's ears by examining them routinely for excess hair, dirt or wax. If they need to be cleaned, use a cleaning solution suggested by your vet and a cloth or tissue wrapped around your index finger. Also remember that the teeth need routine cleanings and check-ups.
hen it comes to baths, remember that too much bathing can be worse for your pet than not enough bathing as it can dry out and irritate the skin. As a general rule of thumb, baths should be given on as as-needed basis. Be sure to use a shampoo specifically designed for pets, not a human shampoo, and rinse thoroughly again and again. Be sure, also, to keep you pet's nails trimmed. |
