Though first aid is not a substitute for veterinary treatment, a first aid kit for your dog can nonetheless come in handy and may even save your dog's life. Just keep in mind that if your dog becomes ill or injured that you must contact your veterinarian immediately. A good fist aid kit for your dog should including the following:
- The phone number of your veterinarian
- Hydrogen peroxide (3%)
- Nonstick bandages for wounds or to control bleeding
- Adhesive tape for bandages
- Gauze for wrapping wounds or even to muzzle your dog
- Towels and cloth
- Milk of Magnesia or activated charcoal for the absorption of poison, though be sure to follow your vet's advice on inducing vomiting
- A large syringe without needle or eyedropper for the administering of oral treatments
- A blanket, floor mat, board or other device that can be used as a stretcher
