When Children Lose A Pet

The loss of a pet can be very difficult for anyone. For children, however, it can be particularly hard. A pet, be it a cat, a dog, or even a hermit crab, can be a child's best friend, and their loss can be sad and confusing. Parents often find it difficult to talk with their children about the loss of a pet, but it's important nonetheless.

When talking with children, be honest. Don't say that the pet was lost or given away. While you may want to protect your children from being hurt, the loss of a pet may be their first experience with death and grieving. It's important that children know that it's healthy and normal to grieve and that it's okay to cry.

The death of a pet can help children to learn that death is a natural part of life. You can explain to children that pet's have shorter life spans, and even begin to discuss your own personal spiritual beliefs. There are several things that you can do to help your children express their feelings and also think of the good times with their pet. You can put together a photo album or scrapbook or even write a list of good things about the pet. You can have your child write a story about or draw a picture of the pet, and you can let them take part in planning some sort of memorial. It's also best to hold off on getting a new pet and not rush into it.

Putting a pet to sleep has its own considerations. Children will often have many questions, and it's best to be honest and truthful, but keep it simple and in language the child understands. It's best if you not refer to euthanasia as ‘putting to sleep' with your children as this may create a fear of sleeping. Allow your child to say good-bye to the pet before he is euthanized. Older children and teens can be present for the euthanasia if they choose to and provided that you've prepared them for what to expect.
