Why do older cats seem to gain weight and is it a problem?

Older cats may have a greater tendency toward obesity as their metabolism slows and their activity levels decrease. Obesity is unhealthy for any age cat, but can be of particular concern with older cats as it can affect their joints, heart and other organs.
