Does Your Dog Qualify for a Good Citizenship?
It may be back to school time, but kids aren't the only ones who will be taking tests this month. Canine Good Citizen tests are being offered around the country now as part of Responsible Dog Ownership Month.
Canine Good Citizen, or CGC, is an AKC certification program recognizing dogs who display good manners, obedience and temperament. "CGC ensures that a dog has been trained and socialized enough to be a responsible part of the community," says Lisa Judge, professional trainer at Best Friends North Plainfield Pet Care Center . "CGC dogs make a positive contribution to society."
Mind your manners To pass the Canine Good Citizenship test, a dog must demonstrate basic obedience skills, including:
- Coming when called,
- Walking in a controlled manner, even through a crowd,
- Obeying "sit" and "down" and "stay" on command,
- Accepting a friendly stranger and sit politely for petting,
- Behaving politely around other dogs,
All dogs that pass the test, which can only be administered by an AKC-approved CGC evaluator, are eligible for a certificate from the American Kennel Club. But more important than the certificates, say dog owners who have completed CGC, is the satisfaction of having a well-mannered pet. "Mastering the CGC skills can help you create a ‘go anywhere' dog," says Michael Bane, professional trainer at Best Friends in Rocky Hill and Avon , Connecticut.
Merits of manners
The emphasis on responsible pet ownership has led to increased recognition of the program by public and private authorities. Some apartment and condominium complexes now require CGC before a dog owner can rent . In certain regions, CGC is a requirement to get homeowners' insurance coverage if you own certain breeds. One Manhattan resident has even submitted a proposal to the MTA requesting that dogs who have passed the CGC test be allowed on subways.
"A well-trained dog is better suited to family life," says Brie Huddleston, professional trainer at Best Friends Briarwood Pet Motel in Cincinnati and a qualified CGC teacher and evaluator. "The CGC program takes training to the next level, and proves that a dog has been trained and socialized enough to be a great pet and a wonderful neighbor."
